– carmen johnson –

I met Carmen a few years ago when she was a fashion model and on a side was pursuing a singing career. Now, she had several songs out and, currently, is exploring mixed media art. Carmen and I spent a few days collaborating. Through her unique look, we were able to introduce some talented New York designers and beauty ideas. To get to know Carmen, please read our interview, check out her SoundCloud, and stay tuned to her latest work at

“I want to remember that I am not my title, my position, my possessions, my appearance, my neighborhood, my age, my body size, my race or income level. I am a souI.”

Where are you from? Your ethnicity.

I was born and raised in Detroit Michigan. My father is African and Native American, and my mother is American, with German and English background.

What is your astrological sign?

I'm a Cancer and a Monkey.

What inspires you?

Seeing people sharing their creative vision or creating something from the ground up always inspires me.

Your dream place is?

I think my dream place is somewhere I have yet to be. I want to see so much in the world still and take myself higher. So, I don't have a dream place yet, but I have an abstract vision of what will one day make up my dream place.

Who are your main supporters?

My parents are and will always be my biggest supporters.

When have you decided to become a model?

I started modeling when I was 14 years old. I’ve always had the desire to be a model. When I was a little girl, I begged my parents to send out my pictures. I always liked the idea of being in front of the camera and portraying different "characters" in a sense, it's like dress up as a job. The fact that I can model is a blessing, but I also have so many other dreams and aspirations that I make a priority.

Do you have other priorities aside from modeling?

Aside from modeling, I am also working hard on my music career. I'm so excited about my single "COLD" I just released last month. The song just felt like the perfect summer release, and I love it because it's a sassy anthem for the females. COLD is the first song off of my Untitled EP I'll be releasing this summer. The song is available on my sound cloud for free download so be sure to check it out.

Your favorite place in New York? Maybe you have some cafe you love to hang out at or a shop.

I don't think I currently have a favorite place in New York. I just love the fact that you can be walking down the street and discover new things all the time. I love when I am on my way to castings and pass really cool art galleries or stores that I would have never known existed.

Who are your favorite designers? Or artists, or models?

I have always been obsessed Roberto Cavalli dresses. Other designers & brands I like, Stella McCartney, Balmain, Alexander Wang, Zuhair Murad. My favorite models are Doutzen Kroes, Adrianna Lima, Kate Moss, Natalia Vodianova.

Where do you usually shop?

I like to shop at Topshop and Urban Outfitters for everyday clothes. Occasionally I'll find something cool in a thrift store.

Do you have a special diet or a physical activity?

I've never been on a strict diet but I'm a healthy eater naturally. You have to be smart about what your body needs and find a balance for the things you may want to indulge in every now and then. I stay very active which helps keep my body to stay in a good shape. I love going to the gym as much as I can and I also take a lot of dance classes.

What is your life motto?

Something my mom always reminds, that really impacts the way I want to live my life "let go of worry and remember to live in the moment" it's very easy to get so caught up with the past regrets or worries about when and how the future will come. I try to just enjoy the moment I'm in. Worrying or dwelling on what is not in our control does nothing but creates negative energy. This is also a great quote that is powerful to me, “ I want to remember that I am not my title, my position, my possessions, my appearance, my neighborhood, my age, my body size, my race or income level. I am a soul". It's so easy to get caught up in society/ industry pressures but you have to remember these things don't make up who you truly are.

What moves you and what makes you get up every morning?

My family, my dreams, the love in my heart, and the new day itself moves me.

How can we make our Earth a better place? You are as an artist how can you impact or let's say improve what's happening with our environment, energy, and peace?

Living with a kind, loving and forgiving heart. I think the world/everyone just needs more love. Love is healing. Letting go of hatred and judgment. As people begin to feel stronger with love, the whole physical world around us will become better.
