NINA HECHT
Tell us a little about you and your work.
I'm Nina, 24 - based in Munich. I work as a designer and freelance illustrator. It all started with drawing portraits of my favorite musicians as a kid - until I discovered fashion and design. I still mostly do portraits, but with a strong focus on fashion.
How do you think the use of Instagram has benefited your art practice?
To be honest I don't have an Instragram account for my art - mainly because I don't own a camera and my phone's camera is broken. But I think I'll change that very soon!
What do you most enjoy depicting in your illustrations?
I like to draw strong, unique characters. It always starts as a naturalistic portrait but then, while drawing, it transforms into a more surrealistic, unique character. I am working in fashion design which - in my case - is more about organizing and research than drawing portraits - so.. No. But I miss that a lot.
Do you have a background in fashion design or the fashion industry?
I graduated from ESMOD Munich in 2012 with honors for the best women's wear collection. Since then I have been wandering around, searching for something that fits me. I am currently working as a fashion design intern at a huge international company.
Do you illustrate full time? Is it your only interest?
Unfortunately not - but I would love to!
What’s your medium of choice?
Pencils, water color and Photoshop.
Explain your typical work process.
I start by searching for the perfect picture - which sometimes lasts for hours. It has to have that certain something, I can't really explain that. The Face has to be all naturalistic.. the rest depends on my current mood. At the end I always add water color effects and color in general in Photoshop. That's it!
Name your top influences (artists or otherwise).
I really like Egon Schiele. His work inspires me!
